Veneers Process: Step-by-Step Guide

Veneers are a popular cosmetic dental procedure for creating a brighter, more even smile. They can be used to cover stained or chipped enamel, balance shapes and proportions, and improve spacing.

Porcelain veneers are a great way to correct natural distractors. In some cases, you can correct crowding or visual distractors with porcelain and avoid the cost and time of orthodontics.

The veneers process typically takes two appointments (not counting your initial evaluation) to complete. This step-by-step guide breaks down the veneers process and answers some frequently asked questions about this dental procedure.

At our Ann Arbor dental office, we often put many hours into helping our patients achieve their goals. Before any porcelain work is done, Dr. Yilmaz creates a working model of your teeth, then puts in time behind the scenes to create the smile that makes you smile. We reveal the “mock up” of the improved smile to the patient, then execute the plan with appointment scheduling.

Any treatment DGY Dentistry embarks on is with the expectation of walking slowly to success, allowing for close patient-dentist collaboration. Your ideas and opinions matter.

What are veneers?

Veneers are custom-made porcelain shells that are applied to the front of your teeth to improve their appearance.

What is the process for veneers?

The veneers process has several steps:

  1. Evaluation
  2. Enamel removal and making a custom mold
  3. Applying your custom veneers

1. Evaluation

The veneers process should always begin with a thorough dental exam and X-ray so your dentist can evaluate whether or not you are a good candidate for veneers. At DGY Dentistry Ann Arbor, our cosmetic dentists provide no-pressure consultations and transparent payment options so you can make an informed decision.

2. Enamel removal and making a custom mold

In your first appointment for veneers, your dentist will apply an anesthetic to numb your existing tooth before removing a thin layer of enamel. This helps prepare the tooth for the veneer.

At DGY Dentistry Ann Arbor, we use a local dental lab that makes veneers from highly refined and fabricated porcelain. This high-quality dental material ensures your veneers are aesthetically pleasing and made to last.

Our experienced cosmetic dentist, Dr. Yilmaz, works with our dental lab partner to make sure the size, shape, and color of your veneers fit well in your mouth so you can have a beautiful and  natural-looking smile.

3. Applying your custom veneers

Once your custom veneers are ready you will return for your second appointment, where the porcelain will be bonded in place.

At DGY Dentistry, we work to make sure the margins of the veneers are seamless, which gives them the most natural look and feel. We are often saddened by the poor workmanship of porcelain work and see way too often the negative response the tissue has on poorly prepared margins. Dentistry is expensive and doing it twice is really expensive!

Veneer process FAQs

Are teeth shaved down for veneers?

A reduction of your natural tooth is necessary for the best aesthetic outcome. The reduction is much less than that of a full crown.

How long is the veneers process?

The veneers process typically takes two appointments.

Is it painful to get veneers?

It should not be painful to get veneers. Your dentist will apply an anesthetic to numb the area.

At DGY Dentistry, Dr. Yilmaz instructs patients that they may have some discomfort following the appointment from the administration of anesthesia, and around the gums where retraction was done for the best margins. Gums do not like bulky crowns or veneers, so a great deal of time is spent on getting the best cosmetic result and making it comfy in the mouth and around the gums.

How long do veneers last on teeth?

Veneers are a permanent dental procedure that can last for decades when cared for properly. This is achieved by following the recommendations of regular preventive care at three, four, or six month intervals. These appointments are a small investment to make to preserve the overall integrity of the cosmetic investment.

Home care and good preventative dental habits also play an important role, along with utilization of a custom made and fitted bite guard that prevents the forces we put on our teeth while we sleep.
